A story of deep embarrassment and a magical T-shirt
“They might hear you twice, see you once… but if they smell you — you’ve lost your chance.”
When I was around twenty, I went to a party. I wanted to dance and meet someone. I approached a few girls — and all of them turned me down. Until one finally agreed… she came closer — and immediately recoiled, grimaced, and said a phrase I’ll never forget:
“Now I understand why no one wants to dance with you. You stink of sweat.”
The ground disappeared from under me. I didn’t know. We don’t notice our own smell. But others do. And that hit to my self-esteem is hard to forget.
From that moment on, I started carrying a can of deodorant in my backpack. I would sniff my armpits before meetings, run to the bathroom to spray, and was afraid to hug anyone too closely. Deodorants irritated my skin, suffocated me with their chemical scent… but I had no other choice.

A conscious path and ditching chemical deodorants
Years later, as I began a more conscious lifestyle, I started to reconsider many things — from the food in my fridge to the fabric in my wardrobe. I began choosing natural fibers, ethical brands, and chemical-free products.
But there was one problem: deodorant.
I tried every “natural” version out there. Sadly, none of them worked. I’m a grown man — after a workout or a hike, I smell… well, strongly.
Then a friend suggested something strange:
“Try a merino wool tee. It’s a sweat-proof t-shirt”
Seriously? A T-shirt? Made of wool? That doesn’t stink? I was skeptical. And being a rational person — I started digging.
I found that merino wool actually has scientifically proven properties that explain why you don’t smell in it, even if you sweat a lot. All sources are easy to find online, but here’s a brief summary:
Scientific research explains why sweat-proof T-shirts made of merino wool work
1. Antimicrobial properties
Sweat smell doesn’t come from sweat itself — but from bacteria that break it down on the skin and in fabric. Merino wool suppresses the growth of these bacteria.
- A study by CSIRO (Australia’s national science agency) showed that merino wool suppresses the development of bacteria like Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus — the very ones responsible for body odor.
- A study from the Institute for Frontier Materials at Deakin University systematically assessed the odor-retention capacity of wool-polyester blends. Wool had the highest odor-absorbing capacity of all tested fabrics.
- Unlike synthetic fibers — where bacteria grow fast (the fibers are smooth and don’t absorb moisture) — wool doesn’t provide bacteria the “food” they need to thrive.
2. Moisture gets locked inside the fiber
- Merino can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while remaining dry to the touch.
The sweat gets trapped inside the fiber, the surface stays dry — giving microbes nothing to grow on. - The study Molecules, 2022 “Antibacterial Properties of Non-Modified Wool, Determined and Discussed in Relation to ISO 20645:2004 Standard” showed that wool doesn’t kill bacteria but removes them from the surface, creating a “no-growth” zone when lifting the sample. Therefore, antibacterial effect comes from the fiber’s structure.
3. Odor doesn’t linger
The AgResearch study in New Zealand (PDF, 2008) showed:
“Wool absorbed less odor compared to polyester. Polyester retained the highest level of body odor even after washing.”
- Merino doesn’t just sweat-proof t-shirt — it traps fewer odors than synthetics and refreshes better with simple airing.
- Even after multiple wears without washing, merino remains fresh (proven in lab tests and trekking experiments).
But odor resistance is just the beginning of what makes a merino wool tee so amazing.
Wool that doesn’t itch
Before, I thought wool = grandma’s sweater: itchy, heavy, and smelly when wet. But when I first put on my pure merino wool T-shirt… I couldn’t believe it. It felt like a cloud. Like the softest cotton — but better. Merino fibers are the finest in nature, and your skin can tell.
No need to wash often
On long trips or mountain hikes, laundry is hard to find. You don’t have time to wash, and there’s no cart with clean clothes following you. And carrying 10 spare shirts in your backpack? No thanks.
This is where merino saves the day again. The unique properties of this T-shirt mean you can wear it for up to 7 days without washing — and it still won’t smell or harbor bacteria. For those trying to save electricity and reduce emissions — this is a game-changer.
No special care, no ironing needed
You’ll be glad to know this wool is easy to wash, tumble-dryable, requires no special treatment — and doesn’t even need ironing!

Thermoregulation
Sheep have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to live on icy Siberian mountains and in the dry plains of Australia.
Their wool protects them from both heat and cold. Likewise, a base layer made from merino wool shields our bodies — it regulates temperature far better than any other fabric and provides comfort across a wide range of climates.
All these features — plus the research above and hundreds of other studies — prove that wool fibers are among the most unique natural materials on earth. Its moisture-wicking, insulating, odor-resistant, and temperature-regulating qualities make merino wool an ideal fabric for those seeking high-performance clothing with minimal maintenance.
I became a full-on merino nerd, replacing my entire wardrobe.
I love buying my shirts from Encamino, because their T-shirts are made from 100% pure merino wool — and surprisingly, they’re also some of the most affordable on the market. I’ve researched every brand selling merino, and most use mixed materials — which reduces the fiber’s unique properties.
If you want to order from them, just email me mina.contactdetails@gmail.com — I’ll share a discount code and help you choose your first merino shirt. And after your first day wearing it… you’ll understand everything.
